Chimney Problem Symptoms & What They Mean

Your chimney usually warns you before it fails. Here are the most common symptoms, what each one typically means, how urgent it is, and which signs mean you should stop using the fireplace right now.

Stop using the fireplace immediately and call us if: you smell gas, you suspect a chimney fire, your carbon monoxide detector sounds, or smoke is filling the room and will not clear. These are emergencies.

Smoke Comes Back Into the Room

Usually means: a blocked or dirty flue, a closed or stuck damper, a cap obstruction, or a draft problem. Urgency: high. Smoke in the living space can carry carbon monoxide. Stop the fire, air out the room and have the chimney checked before the next use.

A Strong Smoky or Campfire Smell When the Fireplace Is Cold

Usually means: creosote buildup combined with moisture in the flue, often made worse by a missing cap or a humid season. Urgency: moderate. It is a clear sign the flue needs sweeping and the cap and draft should be checked.

A Black, Shiny or Tar-Like Coating Inside

Usually means: glazed creosote, the most dangerous type, built up on the glass, damper or flue. Urgency: high. Glazed creosote is hard to remove and highly flammable. Do not burn until it has been professionally addressed.

White Staining or Flaking Brick on the Exterior

Usually means: water is soaking into the masonry. The white staining is efflorescence and the flaking is spalling, both caused by freeze-thaw. Urgency: moderate. It will worsen every winter until the source is repaired and the masonry is sealed.

Water or Stains on the Ceiling Near the Chimney

Usually means: a cracked crown, failed flashing or a missing cap is letting water in. Urgency: moderate to high. Interior water damage spreads, and the moisture also attacks the liner and damper from inside.

A Damper That Is Rusty or Hard to Move

Usually means: water has been getting into the chimney, often for a while. Urgency: moderate. The rust itself is a symptom of a water-entry problem that needs finding.

Pieces of Masonry or Tile in the Firebox

Usually means: the flue liner or the chimney masonry is breaking down. Urgency: high. Fragments of clay tile in the firebox can indicate a cracked liner, which is a serious safety issue. Stop using the fireplace until it is inspected.

Animals, Chirping or Rustling in the Chimney

Usually means: a missing or damaged cap has let birds or small animals nest in the flue. Urgency: moderate. A nest is a fire hazard and a blockage. It needs to be removed and the cap replaced.
